What is EWP?
Eating with Purpose (EWP) is not just about the food we eat.
I believe extraordinary health is three fold: Mind, Body and Spirit. I cringe using that phrase because it is so overly used and misused these days… but all three are critical for total transformation! My core philosophy is: to turn your health concerns and fears over to Christ (Spirit) coupled with a positive mental perspective and knowledge (Mind) of how to incorporate the right foods into your lifestyle (Body) in a delicious, easy and convenient way. To me being healthy is about being balanced, not rigid perfection (which doesn’t even exist, as hard as one may try… I’ve tried, not a fun path to go down!).
For so many people today, food is a source of conflict and confusion rather than a source of nourishment. Eating right doesn’t have to be difficult… in fact, it shouldn’t! I understand that most people know that it is important to eat healthy, but they are often confused and overwhelmed with how to make that a reality in their own lives.
Here at EWP you will find recipes based on a real foods, seasonal diet FREE of:
Grains
Gluten
Yeast
Refined sugars – sugar-free or very low sugar recipes
Corn
Peanuts
Soy – very limited
Dairy – very limited, mostly yogurt and butter
Processed foods
… with the emphasis on balancing the body of parasitic yeasts and fungi. Yuck, I know, but this is the key to breaking those sugar addictions, getting off of that diet roller coaster and having freedom from your health issues… no matter what they might be; weight problems, digestive issues, depression, fatigue, allergies, heart disease, diabetes, infertility, cancer, etc… the list goes on and on.
While I don’t believe in diets per say, sadly enough many of us and our families are dealing with health issues, so we first need to get things back into balance by eliminating certain foods from the diet. Then we can build upon those foods and settle into a healthy way of eating. The starting point is Doug Kaufmann’s Phase 1 Lifestyle. What is the Phase 1 Lifestyle?
The Phase 1 Lifestyle is the foundation to how I eat. After committing to Phase 1 exclusively for a period of time to balance and cleanse my body, I expanded to a wider variety of whole-real foods and listen to my body and what it needs (You’re able to do this with ease once you cleanse and balance the body). So here at EWP, you will hear me refer to recipes or various foods as Phase 1 or Phase 2 friendly.
This blog is a place to find information on foods you might not be familiar with and how to incorporate them into your diet. I believe that eating healthy is not just about taking everything OUT of the diet, but instead adding IN nutrient dense foods that are satisfying and delicious so that you LOVE the food you are eating!
My intent is to help you take a BIG breath and not stress over food. I want to make it easy and fun, so you can view food as nourishment… not as a monumental chore or “another program” you once tried. I’ve come full circle with my eating, as you will read in my health testimonial. I’m not perfect with my eating and I don’t try to be. I love to eat healthy most of the time, but I will have an occasional treat without an ounce of guilt. I no longer let food define or dictate who I am and how I feel about myself. I eat to nourish my body, so I feel great and can concentrate on the things that matter most!
Thank you for visiting Eating with Purpose. I’m thrilled to get to know you through this blog as we all work together to spread the knowledge about what true health really is… Real Life, Real Health, Real Food… Made Easy!!

Hey Kristin!
So excited to come across your website. I was doing research today on knowthecause.com preparing myself for a 6 week phase 1 diet for my family. We have done this before and afterwards try to obtain a phase 2 diet.
After getting off track for a few months I needed new recipe ideas and I am so thankful to find some here!
Learned alot about chia, amaranth, buckwheat and more thanks to you!
Excited to try and invent new recipes of my own and can’t wait to see more from you!!
Thanks so much Brenna! I look forward to interacting through the site and hearing your progress!
Kristin,
Thank you for your web site! It is a real support! I know coffee is not part of the phase 1 diet but why? I really need some STRONG reasons to help me work towards giving it up.
THANKS!
Oh great question, I think I might need to eventually do a whole post on this! The main reason it is not on phase 1 is because it has been shown to contain mycotoxins. Here’s a great article on how to find mycotoxin-free coffee. It is also important to not be addicted to anything and that is the second reason it is not on Phase 1. If you have to have a cup of coffee to get you going in the morning then the body is not functioning properly. It was also thought that coffee was a bean and beans are Phase 2, but it is technically classified as a berry, so that’s good news! In my opinion coffee has some wonderful health properties if it’s organic, not loaded with sugar and it’s only consumed a few times a week. I love a cup of coffee on Sunday morning before church. I use canned coconut milk, vanilla, KAL liquid stevia, cinnamon and maca (balances hormones and increases energy). I love to transform it into a really healthy treat! Hope that helps!
Hi Kristin,
I saw you on Know The Cause and wanted to read about your story. You are an inspiration! I have ordered one of the cookbooks and am waiting on it to arrive as I plan out my diet.
Fortunately, I have already eliminated caffeine and all artificial sweeteners, but that was due to trying to find out why I am having panic attacks while driving.
My question is, have you heard of anyone getting rid of panic attacks by switching to the phase 1 diet?
All of a sudden last year, I started getting serious panic attacks while driving. Now I can barely drive myself anywhere. I used to think panic attacks and anxiety was all faked and people should just “deal with it”. However, now that it has happened to me, I am on a mission to find a way to stop them. I know it has to be due to nutrition.
Can this help me?
Hi Sharon, thank you so much for our kind words! Sounds like you are doing a great job at improving your diet. I’m not able to claim anything “cures” a health issue (you know how that is), but as you read, I have dealt with depression, which would be another, so called, “mental issue”, and for me through diet and prayer I am free from this completely. I think your on the right track so keep pushing forward. Blessings, Kristin
I am sure you have heard this before…Your story mirrors mine. How insightful to find the key at an early age. I am in my early 50′s. My husband suggested i watch Know the Cause as the link to my weight problem. I have my Blendtec on order, received my books from KTC, and most importantly I prayed. I realized i cannot do this alone. i prayed starting last Wednesday to give me the strenght to both diet and exercise toward weight loss and improved health. I am in good health I say due to good genes, but I will cannot afford to ride on thei advantage.
I will continue to come back to your site. Thank you for the story…just in time.
BTW, I did lose 3 lbs in one week. Just what i prayed for, 3 lbs/week. I know that will not always happen, but it gave me the boost I needed and appreciation for the power of prayer.
Marsha, I’m so excited for you! Remember one day at a time and perfection is not the goal. My perfectionistic attitude is one thing that kept me on the roller coaster so long. It sounds like you have the right attitude and I wish you the best! Keep us posted!! Hugs, Kristin
I do Phase One and know yogurt is allowable, but what about fermented foods like keifer, saurkraut ect? I have leaky gut that has caused food allergies and my eyelids swell, itch, flake. I get other itchy patches on face and neck. Have taken over the past 8 months Dyflucan both by mouth and iv. Peroxide iv and Nystatin by mouth.
Anyway my gut is not healing and I’ve heard abought fermented food helping but was not sure if they are Phase 1 safe! Over all Phase 1 helped me greatly. I lost 45 pounds!!!
Fermented foods are wonderful! I love Bubbie’s sauerkraut and pickles. Both Phase 1 friendly! Hope you’re feeling better soon… keep persevering and stick with it. Blessings, Kristin
Hi Kristin,if you remember me you help me out in the past and now to God be the Glory I see you on “Know the Cause” you are a blessing continue do to the work of God helping people . thank you always Sherry
Yes, of course I remember you Sherry! Hope all is well, so great to hear from you! Much love, Kristin
Thanks for your website, I’ve been on phase for 2 weeks now, have lost about 6 lbs, am trying to get health while losing weight and changing my lifestyle and views on food all together. But I need more recipes to try new things as I am starting to get bored with meat, veggies, berry smoothies and nuts. Am a creative cook in my own right, and cant say I’m craving, but I miss that occasional dessert and I truly miss rice and grains. Are there any I can eat, if I know I will get some back, that will make my journey a little easier. Please help me with some recipes. Got D Kaufmanns Phase 1&2 book, but phase 1 says NO pickles and you say yes, why? What can I cook with buckwheat or quinoas. I have never tried either. Sorry for length of comment/questions. And again, thanks and may God continue to bless you. Ladymd
Most pickles are made with vinegar, which can strip the good bacteria from your gut. Bubbies pickles are made without vinegar and are loaded with more good bacteria than a probiotic supplement.
Check out my posts on buckwheat to learn more about it. I also have a video on how to cook quinoa. As well as several recipes incorporating these two ingredients, two favorites are: Creamy Berry Buckwheat and Easy Quinoa Dinner. Blessings!
Kristin, if vinegar is bad, what about Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar with the mother? I understood that to be healthy. And can you explain fermentation – when it is good and when it is bad. It seems I hear some things are good because they are fermented and some things are bad because they are fermented. I’m a little confused.
Oh one other thing, I don’t like fake food, like foods that claim to have same texture and taste but are made from fiber, I have tried the pasta and rice, sad to say they had the texture of rubber bands in my mouth and they did’nt taste good at all. I need foods that taste good and will satiate my soul food taste buds. LOL I am going to check out your pantry to get some ideas because I love pasta as well. Thanks again
Hi Kristin,
I would like to get your opinion on King Sorba noodles. They have a 100% buckwheat noodle and a sweet potato/buckwheat noodle. I use these in soups and as a pasta alternative.
100% buckwheat noodles are a great option!
Hi Kristin, I have been watching Know the Cause for many years, you really add to the show. I have been exposed to mold in my air conditioner this summer and am having breathing problems, would phase one help that? My problem is I do not have much of an appetite lately, is there any type of protein shake allowed on phase one? Appreciate your opinion.Patty
BioActive Nutrients has a great grass-fed whey protein. This is one of two companies in the US that actually have real grass-fed whey. Many companies say theirs is, when in fact it is not. Hope this helps!
Hi Kristen,
Thanking God I have come across your website as well as Amy’s from Simply Sugar and Gluten Free. I am suffering from joint pain, water retention, weight gain (after 2 births) that I seem not to be able to shed and I eat healthy. And most recently noticed depression every few days. I have been eating more grain carbs and sugar and feel they keep pulling me in. I am looking to change this. I want my life back and feel comfortable again. I am looking into the Phase 1, can you direct me to maybe a menu plan or any suggestions are welcomed.
Thank you for all you do!!
Blessings,
Kristie
Kristin you have no idea how wonderful and helpful this site is for everyone!!!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this. Love your video’s of exactly how to do things!! I Thank God for finding you on this site. Joyce
Hello Kristin, I really need some help.. My family and I recently found out that our house was hiding black mold and leaking sewer gas.. We had to evacuate the home until it could be fixed. The problem is we all have health issues now.. I have followed you and Doug for about a year.. And really tried to learn how to eat better but now after learning about the mold etc.. I am really scared because I keep going to the emergency room with everything from anxiety, headaches, breast pain, abdomen pain and more.. But they say there is nothing wrong with me.. I started seeing an alternative doctor who told me I have a Candida overgrowth – that we all do!! That we have to do a diet that will starve the Candida.. I am struggling so much with this cuz my 14 yr old is addicted to wheat and sugar and potato chips
What can I do for him and for us?? Any advice would be greatly apprecaited..
I’m glad to have stumbled across your blog! I have an important question that I’m hoping you can answer. I was planning on starting Doug Kauffman’s phase one diet in a week or two because I have chronic fatigue syndrome, but I just found out that I’m pregnant. Do you know know if it would be safe to drastically change my diet like that right now (I eat pretty healthy, but I love carbs and dairy)? I know that a lot of people lose weight on the diet. I know someone who actually had a hard time keeping weight on while on the diet. I however can’t afford to lose any weight. I’m naturally thin and went through a period of time where my weight kept unaccountably dropping too low due, apparently, to my CFS. If I wasn’t pregnant I would just meet that challenge as it came, but now I there’s the possibility of harming my baby if I lose weight. Would a slow transition into the diet (phasing some foods out and some in over time) be a better option for me than changing everything all of a sudden? Any recommendations?
I so appreciate all your input on KTC, and look forward to learning more from you on this site. Thank you!
Have you any suggestions for safe, healthy substitutes for beef/chicken bullion cubes or other similarly used “flavor boosters” for soups, stir fries, veggies, etc. ?
Anxiously awaiting your response,
Kay
So happy I found your site, Kristin. I have been watching you on “Know the Cause” and I must say that your show segments are my favorite. My husband and I started Phase one a few months ago and are now on Phase two. We have each lost 20 pounds we definitely have more energy now. He has a skin issue called Mycosis Fungoidis and I must say it has never looked better. It is due to God answering our prayers and our changing our eating lifestyle.
A question I have is, how important is it to stay on phase one and not phase two? The main foods we use from phase two would be brown rice and beans. Is this something we should eat sparingly or is it fine as long as no additives and preservatives?
Thanks again for all you do and for reading my comment.
Tammy
Hey Kristin! So proud of all you have done….you guys look amazing!! You are so inspiring…..been reading up on the yeast issues myself and looking forward to learning more through your website! Definitely things we need to learn about here…..miss you guys and glad you are doing well!
Hey Kristin,
I view Know the Cause each night on one of the church channels for my area. I have learned so much through the show and always look forward to your input. I try to teach my family and friends what I have learned, but they’re not interested. I am so thankful that I ran across the show one night as I was looking for something really good to watch. I am 75 years old and on no medication, but still struggle with the Phase I diet even though I know I need it. I still like the carbs even though I try really hard to leave them alone. I’m so thankful for you and the others on the show.
